Do bolts stretch when torqued?
As you tighten a bolt, it will stretch and generate a clamp load. The key to proper tightening of a fastener is to torque it until just slightly less than the bolt's elastic limit. A bolt will stretch slightly as it is tightened. If you tighten the bolt too much, it will stretch beyond its elastic limit.

What happens if you reuse a torque to yield bolt?
These bolts cannot and should not be reused due to the stress caused to the bolt during its first installation. It is important to be aware that these bolts will not have the same clamping strength if attempted to be used a second time. Torque-to-yield bolts may break if reused or become loose over time.
A hydraulic bolt tensioning tool provides a quick and easy method for tightening large diameter bolts to high and accurate pre-loads.
